Philippine consumer prices climbed to a near 17-year high of 12.2 percent in July from a year earlier, above the central bank’s forecast range of 11.2 to 12 percent, the statistics office said on Tuesday.
Inflation in June was at 11.4 percent from a year earlier. A Reuters poll last week had forecast the July number would come in at 11.8 percent.
The July headline inflation rate was the highest since December 1991.
Core inflation, which strips out some volatile food and energy items, reached an annual 6.3 percent in July compared to 6.6 percent in June, the National Statistics Office said.
